About Safe Haven – A Ray of Hope
Board Code of Conduct
Our Commitment as a Board
As trustees of Safe Haven – A Ray of Hope, we are committed to upholding the highest standards of governance, collaboration, and integrity. Together and individually—we strive to:
1. Create a Safe Space
Foster an environment where everyone feels welcome, heard, and encouraged to speak openly and honestly.
2. Positively Challenge Each Other
Engage in constructive dialogue without confrontation. We avoid dismissive responses such as “no” or “that won’t work.”
Instead, we ask open, solution-oriented questions: who, what, when, and how—avoiding accusatory “why” questions.
3. Think, Then Speak
We reflect before speaking, aiming to contribute meaningfully and succinctly to the discussion.
4. Ask the Difficult Questions
We address issues directly. If there is an “elephant in the room,” we work together to bring it into the open and resolve it.
5. Act Strategically
Our focus is external and long-term. We look beyond the immediate to ensure the charity’s future impact and sustainability.
6. Respect Operational Boundaries
We recognise that operational delivery is the responsibility of the CEO and management. Our role is to provide oversight—not to manage day-to-day operations.
7. Focus on Solutions
We reflect on the past only to learn from it. We avoid dwelling on limitations and instead explore possibilities and potential actions.
8. Welcome Differing Viewpoints
We respect and value diverse perspectives. Every board member has the right to hold and express their opinion—and so do we.
9. Avoid Assumptions
We do not judge based on who someone is, but respond thoughtfully to what has been said.
10. Ensure Inclusive Participation
We value contributions from all members—young or old, professional or those with lived experience. No one voice should dominate the room.
11. Be Slow to Take Offence, Quick to Apologise
We approach misunderstandings with humility, grace, and a willingness to repair.
12. Give and Receive Accountability
We give permission to others to kindly remind us when we stray from these values—and we receive that feedback with gratitude.
13. Promote Safety, Fairness, and Respect
We accept personal and collective responsibility for ensuring everyone is treated fairly, respectfully, and protected from harm in our meetings and work.
